How to Keep Volleyball Stats with Tap Live Stats

Volleyball is all rallies, and every rally ends with a kill, an ace, a block or an error. Tap Live Stats lets you record each one on your phone and keeps the points for you, so the box score shows who scored, who passed and set, and where the points were given away. This guide covers recording each rally, the score, and reading the box score column by column.

Before the game

Open Tap Live Stats, tap Track Player Stats, then Start New Game and choose Volleyball. Enter the home and visiting team names, check the date and time, and tap OK. Your game appears in the list; tap it to start recording.

Have both rosters' jersey numbers handy. Rallies are quick, so knowing the numbers in the rotation saves a lot of guessing.

What you can record

The buttons are grouped by what they do:

  • Points: Kill, Ace and Block. Each one gives the player's team a point.
  • Ball control: Pass, Dig and Set.
  • Errors: Service Error, Attack Error and Rotation Error. Each one gives the other team a point.

Recording a play

Every play takes the same three steps:

  1. Tap the button for what just happened, such as Kill.
  2. On the number pad, check the team. The pad names the team at the top; tap the other team's button to switch.
  3. Tap the player's jersey number and tap the green check mark.

The red ✗ closes the pad without saving, and the backspace key fixes a mistyped digit. Recorded plays appear in a list at the top of the screen, newest first.

Quick-select jerseys

Below the keypad are five quick-select slots. The first five jersey numbers you record fill them, and after that one tap on a slot enters that number. To put the number you have typed into a slot instead, tap the slot before you confirm. Loading your regulars into the slots early makes a fast game much easier to keep up with.

Keeping the score

The app keeps rally points for you: a Kill, Ace or Block scores for the player's team, and a Service Error, Attack Error or Rotation Error scores for the other team. Deleting the play takes the point back off.

The score counts points, not sets. At the start of each set, tap each team's score and set it to 0; the box score keeps counting the whole match. If the score ever drifts from the scoreboard, tap it and type the correct number.

Recording common plays

Each button records one player's part of a play, so a play that involves two players takes two entries. Recording them the way a statistician would keeps both teams' box scores honest:

  • A kill: Kill for the hitter, then Set for the setter and Pass for the player who passed the ball, if you track them.
  • A block: Block only for a block that wins the rally, because it scores a point. A touch that keeps the ball in play is not a block.
  • A serve: Ace for an ace, Service Error for a missed serve, and Dig for the player who digs a hard serve or attack.
  • Any other error, such as a net touch or a double contact: there is no button for it, so tap the score and give the point by hand.

Fixing mistakes

Wrong player? Tap the pencil next to the play and enter the right jersey number. Wrong button or wrong team? Tap the trash can to remove the play and record it again; deleting a scoring play takes its point back. The box score updates to match.

If you are signed in, deleting a play also deletes its backed-up copy, so it does not come back, and edits are backed up the next time your game is.

Reading the box score

Open View Stats on the game for a box score of every player on both teams, sorted by jersey number, with a TOTAL row for each team. Here is what each column means and how it is calculated:

  • K, ACE, BLK: kills, aces and blocks.
  • PASS, DIG, SET: passes, digs and sets.
  • SE, AE, RE: service errors, attack errors and rotation errors.

A dash means the player had none of that stat, or no attempts for a percentage.

Sharing the stats

Tap Save PDF on the box score to create a report with both teams' full stats and totals. The PDF is made on your phone, so it works even without a signal, and you can send it to the team as soon as the game ends.

If you are signed in, your games are backed up to your account whenever you open the Track Player Stats list, and Save to Cloud on the recording screen backs them up right away. Cloud Stats, on the Track Player Stats page, then has a Volleyball tab with one row per player per game and every box-score column. Filter by jersey number to see one player's season, or tap Export CSV for a spreadsheet. A free account shows its active games; Premium includes archived games too.

Tips for accurate stats

  • Record the rally as soon as the point ends, before the next serve.
  • Only record a Block when it wins the point. It adds to the score.
  • Reset the score to 0–0 at the start of each set, and write each set's final score down if your league needs it.
  • Not sure what a screen does? Tap the ? at the top of the recording screen for a short walkthrough.
